THE MALDIVES

The Republic of the Maldives is in the Indian Ocean, spreading across the equator from north to south. It is a nation of 1190 islands lying some 700km south west of India and Srilanka.
Maldives is a remarkably unique and a n\homogeneous nation in terms of shared history, culture, and religion. Maldivians take pride in their shared heritage and in the way of life, which has provided a firm foundation for both unity and stability. It’s a constitutional democracy with a popular Government.
Maldives is a member of the United Nations, the British Common Wealth of Nations, the Non-Align Movement, the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC), the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund, the Asian Development Bank and many more other international organizations

The economy and business infrastructure
The GDP has grown at an annual rate of around 6% from 1992-1993 fuelled mainly by the expansion and growth of tourism industry (an average of 10% annually ) and the modernization of the fisheries sectors. Over the past two decades the traditional economic life of subsistence agriculture and fisheries has been transformed into a market driven, skills-based economy.
Infrastructure is well developed in telecommunication with its stare of the art facilities. Telephone ownership is high in the capital and in the tourist islands. Apart from the capital most of the southern atolls now have full telecommunication facilities and before the year 2000 service will be expanded to include all the inhabited islands.

Being a nation of islands, the main mode of transportation is water taxis. Light aircrafts, sea planes and helicopter are in operation in making all the island accessible. There are 5 airports including 2 airports that can accommodate wide bodied aircrafts.

The main commercial port is in Male’.

Electricity and power generation are currently provided by the Public sector to densely populated islands. In other areas private electricity is used.
Maldives has relatively good social infrastructure in areas such as educational, health and housing although with economic expansion and high demand exist for continuous improvement of such services. The government has so far invested heavily in these areas especially in primary and secondary education as a long-term growth objective.
